Saying good bye to Sammi Jo

To day we had to say good bye to our Sammi Jo. We are not sure what happened to her on Saturday. She came limping across the lawn and then went into the garage and sat down holding her right paw up. Larry asked her what was wrong and said come here and she would not move, he picked her up and brought her in the house and we examined her paw to see if she had a bur in it but we could find nothing. She began to act weird and hold her head back and then her hold right side of her body went stiff. We call the vet and he had us bring her right down. He gave her a Valium and drew some blood to see what was going on. He brought her back to us and she had sort of come around but still could not stand on her right legs. The blood tests showed that her electrolyte's were very off and he kept her and started an IV. They kept her over night and called Sunday Morning and told us that if we wanted to take her to Garden City and have an MRI we should go then. Larry asked how much that would be and he told us $7000.00! I could not believe that. The Dr. said that she now had no use of any of her legs. We could not afford the MRI so we opted to let the Dr. watch her for 24 hours and try some laser treatments. The Dr. said that he thought she had had some kind of injury to the right side of her neck or right shoulder. We have racked our brains and there has not been anything that we can think of that might have happened to her. He did three treatments and she had no improvement this morning and in fact he said she was in some amount of pain. We went to see her this morning and we could tell that she was so uncomfortable and just wanted to be done. She new us and would try to roll over but could not and could not get her feet under her. She was just very frustrated. It was very hard to see. The Dr. said that she was having some neurological problems and was not recovering. So we said our good byes and I took a few pictures. This was such a hard thing to do, you know that you are very attached to your pet and treat them like they are one of the family, Sammie was very attached to Larry, she would go everywhere with him and everyone up here knew her. She was her Dad's girl! We will miss her so very much!

Larry is having a hard time with letting her go but didn't want to see her suffer anymore. It would be so nice if the tests they need to do to help our pets didn't cost so much.

Below are the pictures of saying good bye followed by the pictures that I scanned of Sammie when I brought her home to Larry in July 2005, she was 8 weeks old.

We love you Sammi!

Sammi just could not move

Those pictures made me cry. How sad. I wish we could do more for our pets when they need it. It shouldn't be that expensive for an animal.
